Help! I Can't Find My Washing Machine!

From birth it seems I've been a messy person.  Don't believe me ?  Just ask my mom, I'm sure she'd be happy to share with you all of her exasperated attempts to get me organized and keep me organized when I was young.  Or, you could just open one of my closets and look in...or worse yet take a peek at the current condition of my laundry room...
My washer and dryer surrounded with dirty and clean clothes, mops and brooms shoved between, and that's my utility tub beneath the overflowing clothes basket.

Laundry room closet (pretty scary huh?) filled with shirts to iron, stuff to go to goodwill, laundry basket of single socks (where do they disappear too??? UGH!) with misc. items piled on top, work out videos, stuff I didn't no where else to put, etc... Yikes!  This room and closet need desperate help!!!
Why air my dirty laundry in public?  Well, I thought about just simply sharing with you in words about my journey to organize and redo my laundry room and then only posting the final pictures when I was all done.  But then you really wouldn't have any idea on just how bad it is.   I also thought about sharing a pic. from a messy laundry room that I came across on this cute blog: A Scrapbook of Me: Laundry Room Ideas I found while I was searching on google for organizing ideas.  After thinking on it, I decided it would be better if I were just honest with you and myself about the desperate condition of the room!  Besides just knowing you know will keep me accountable to get this project done.  And that would make my husband really, really happy!  My mom too!

Now that I've shared with you the embarrassing condition of this small room I'm hoping some of you might help me come up with ideas on how to get this room organized.

Here are some things my husband and I have considered so far:

1) Taking the doors off of the closet and putting in some sort of organizing system (inexpensive one).  Which  would include:
                       a) Shelves for laundry baskets:  atleast five
                       b) A place for dirty laundry: could be another shelf & laundry basket
                       c) A clothes rod for out of season jackets (maybe) and/or shirts that
                           need ironing
                       d) Shelves for Storage baskets for misc. items such as lonely socks
                       e) A place for my vacuum cleaner would be a bonus (it just takes up
                           floor space now)

* Here is the current dilema with the closet situation:  behind the utility sink is a wall and behind the wall is the closet.  If I wanted shelves back in there would I be able to access them?  If not then I think my only solution is to have a closet rod that sticks a little past the opening so I can access the hanging clothes.  What do you think?

2)  My husband is considering removing a cabinet from above the utility sink and put up a rod to hang things that need to be ironed.  I'm debating about the loss of the cabinet, because it is full after all.  It would look something like this, but without the cabinet above it:

http://www.generalcabinets.com/ laundry_rooms.htm

3) I would like to be able to have a place to dry delicates.  Right now my only option is to lay sweaters and things that need to lay flat on the washer to dry.

4) I currently have my ironing board and iron hanging on the wall adjacent to my washer and dryer.  This works fine now, but I'm wondering if there is a better option...

5) Perhaps painting the cabinets and trim white (like in above pic.), along with a cheery color on the wall (like below pic.)?

Wow, I love the cheeriness of this one but don't think it's the right color for me!  What a contrast compared to my current laundry room!!!  I'm starting to get excited!  Time for me to get off the computer and start sorting and getting rid of the mounds of unneeded stuff in my laundry room.  For that I'm going to grab some garbage bags: one for goodwill, one for the garbage, and one for putting away in another room.  Wish me luck and I'll let you know how things are going in a few days.

"But, I Love the Feel of a Good Book in my Hands!"

I'm nostalgic about many things, mostly though I'm nostalgic about old books.  Not just the words themselves that are on the page but the look, the feel, and the musty smell.  I love when I get my hands on an early edition and all the better if I get the first edition.  I think the reason it brings me such pleasure is that it makes me think of slower simpler times.  Of course that's all in my naive nostalgic mind.  Since the days of yesteryear were anything but simpler.  Could you imagine having to go out in the middle of winter traipsing through the snow to pump water from the well outside, lug it into the kitchen, heat it up on a wood burning stove that you had chopped and hauled wood in for then stoked in order to get hot enough.  Then once the water was finally at the right temp you could wash your dishes, your clothes or bathe etc... No, it definitely was not an easier time especially when you consider all of our modern conveniences such as hot water coming right out of the tap or washing machine.   Speaking of washing machines, think of all that scrubbing and wringing they used to have to do just for one shirt let alone a whole families worth of clothes.  I shudder to think how long it would take me if I had to do my family of 8's clothes all by hand. Yikes!  No wonder people were more physically fit in those days!  And they didn't even have to go to a gym or pop in a video to get that way!?!

Oops, I guess I got off track a little.  So, where was I?  Oh yes, I was saying I'm nostalgic about books especially old ones.  That I am!  So, when my husband who knew about my love of reading started to ask me what I thought about the eReaders, I told him I was opposed to the idea.  My objections:  I love the feel of a good book in my hands, it just doesn't seem right, how awful to think books could be replaced someday by these, and on and on.  Nonetheless, for almost a year he kept questioning me feeling me out on the subject.  His prodding had me thinking more and more about the idea of someday owning one.  As I considered it I started to see some of the possible benefits.  Such as I wouldn't need to lug around a huge over stuffed book bag when I go places since all my books would be stored on one little device.  Which would mean I could take all the eBooks I own anywhere I went!  Wow!  I told him that perhaps I would consider one after all, but it would never fully replace actual books for me.  We casually looked at the many possibilities out there.  Together we looked at those that were sold in the large bookstores and on Amazon.  We also looked at the knock offs.  This I thought was simply window shopping more then serious investigation.  Imagine my surprise when for Christmas I opened up a NOOKcolor !!!  I nearly cried as emotions of surprise, joy, and guilt all swept over me at the same time.  With six kiddo's to buy for we just don't spend that much on each other for Christmas.

My New NOOKcolor
Needless to say I was anxious to try out my NOOKcolor and immediately I was sold on it!!!  From the colorful children's books that read to you (our youngest loves these), to the free NOOKbooks, to the old editions of Christian classics that have been scanned (you can download these for free) such as Spurgeon, Amy Carmichael, etc... to it's highlighting and note taking capabilities, then there's the web browsing capabilities, along with the apps such as Pandora, the back-lighting makes it so you can read in the pitch dark, and then there is all the NOOKbooks you can purchase download and read almost instantly.  Of course these are only some of the features there are many more along with the promise of more apps to come soon.

Over the last 3 months I have read more Novels then I had in the last five years.  All of which have been free thus far.   One caution though!  If you own a Nook and want to do some free reading I highly recommend reading the descriptions and reviews carefully before deciding on which free NOOKbook to download to your device .   By doing so I have been saved from downloading and reading a book with content that I do not want to be exposed to.  It seems others have not been as fortunate.  As a result of carefully screening which books to choose I must say I have enjoyed all of the books I've read thus far!  Most of which have been by Christian Publishers.

The last free NOOKbook I read is the one in the above photo: The Apothecary's Daughter by Julie Klassen (it is no longer being offered for free, but I'd pay for this one).  If you love Jane Austin then you would really enjoy this book.  This book held my attention the whole time making it hard to put it down.  I've started a new book by a different Author since, but it seems flat and slow moving in comparison.  I am a huge fan of Jane Austin's books so that could be why this book along with it's Christian emphasis is definitely a favorite!!!  I can't wait to be able to purchase and read the other books by this Author.  For those of you who don't have an eReader yet, don't worry!!!  It is also available in book form or if you download the Free NOOK app at Barnes & Noble  for your PC you can then start reading the book almost immediately on your PC.

One last thing, I want you to know that I and my family members are not employed at Barnes & Noble nor do I in anyway benefit if you decide to purchase a NOOK or NOOK color!  I just wanted to share with you the journey I've been on from book lover to book and NOOK lover.  I probably would have said the same about any eReader I would have been given as a gift.  This just happens to be the one my husband chose and comes with some perks the others didn't.  If all this talk has sparked an interest within you to consider an eReader I would recommend that you do as we did and compare the positives and the negatives of each along with the cost before you decide.  Or perhaps you will just stick with your books and well, that's o.k. too!!!  Really!!!   However this nostalgic lady has embraced both, and I'm glad I did! I'm mostly grateful for my husband who was wise enough to push and prod me until I jumped on board!  I love you Honey!!!

Peace! Be Still!

Jesus Calms the Storm
"Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.  The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

Matthew 8:23-27 (NIV)

Recently I found myself anxious about the many things in my life that were beyond my control and I felt powerless to stop the incessant  worrying.  My mind kept dwelling on the worst case scenarios, all the "what ifs".  There was no rest for my soul, no peace, and no joy in my heart.  Just a constant sense of impending doom.  I desperately wanted to find comfort in my God, but I could not hear His still small voice above the clatter of my own anxiety ridden thoughts.  Then it happened, it was so sudden like a gale wind that appeared out of nowhere.  His voice broke through to the depths of my heart "Peace!  Be Still!"  Instantly the weight of all my fears and anxiety had been obliterated as I embraced those life giving Words.  As I lingered on those words I felt a spreading warmth sweep over my entire being.  The kind of warmth that happens when you know that you are truly loved, through and through, just as you are.

How amazing and Humbling it was for me to have Jesus respond in such a gentle, patient, and loving way.  He could have been angry with me and rightfully so for my lack of faith, but instead He remembered that I am just dust.  He was not surprised by my thoughts or my giving into my fears since He knows them all already and yet He loves me anyways.

Dear Sisters, Jesus wants to calm the storm raging in your hearts today too!  Can you hear His still small voice echoing in the inner chambers of your mind "Peace! Be Still!"?  Those Words are not just for me, but for you too!  Stop for a moment from what you are doing and reflect on the One who has the power to calm the fiercest storms even those that rage in our own minds.

John 14:27 (Amplified Bible)

"Peace I leave with you; My [own] peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. [Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed; and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.]"

Lessons Learned in the Fire

It's hard for me to watch someone I love in a lot of pain.  I'm not referring to physical pain (though that's hard too), but emotional pain.  I'm the kind of person who would do anything I could to help ease anothers pain, especially if that person is someone I love.   One of the hardest lessons I'm learning is that though I can try and comfort someone with the same comfort I have received through personal suffering it won't help them if they refuse it.  If I can not remove their pain, and they refuse to hear and receive my attempts to comfort them then what am I to do?

I find myself in this helpless place right now and these are some of the lessons I'm learning which are not in any particular order (many of these have been passed onto me by others and some I'm learning at deeper and deeper levels):

First: I'm not anyone's Savior, my job is to simply point them to Jesus.    The first time I herd this statement it hit me like a ton of bricks across my forehead.  Duh!  Yes, of course!  What freedom and peace there is when I remind myself that Jesus is the only one who can heal the deep hurts within each of us.  "I, even I, am the LORD, And besides Me there is no savior" Isaiah 43:10-12.

Second:  "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink."  In other words I can point them to Christ, point out or remind them of there need for Him (even as a believer), and tell of His great love and the peace found in Him.  But no matter how hard I try I can't make them believe or receive the hope found in Him alone.

Thirdly:  I can pray for them.  Often I tend to feel like prayer is somehow second best, after all I should be doing something shouldn't I?  So when I've exhausted all my own resources and I'm left with nothing but prayer I can sometimes feel as if though I've given up and I'm not really doing anything.  When the truth of the matter is that prayer is essential, since we can do nothing on our own apart from God.   Another struggle I find I have in prayer for others is that of discouragement.  Especially when I've prayed hard and for a long time and still have not seen any answers.  When that happens I am tempted to think why even bother.   That's when I cling to scriptures like these: 2 Corinthians 5:7 "For we live by faith not by sight"  and Galatians 6:9 "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Fourth:  I must not trust my own feelings and emotions.  The only trustworthy source is God's Word and the truths found within.  My emotions lead me all over the place in my thoughts and none of it is healthy.  If I were to let my emotions get the best of me I would crawl into bed and never get out.  Therefore I must not act on my emotions, or for that matter think on what they are saying to me (dwelling on them feeds them).  Instead I need to run to God's Word immersing myself in the comfort and truths found there.

Fifth:  When in the midst of a trial I need to seek comfort within scripture by immersing myself in it and reminding myself of the truths of the gospel and God's sacrificial love for me.  That His love is constant, He is in control, He is trustworthy, and that He will carry me through everything He has allowed me to face.  Not only will He carry me through He will also work it out for my good.

Sixth:  That no one can steal my joy unless I let them.  This one I find I have to remind myself over and over again since my first reaction to others ongoing pain and bitterness is my joy quickly disappears and is replaced with discouragement and fear.  But I don't have to stay there.  When I remind myself that they cannot steal my joy, that is the first step needed in remaining joyful despite of others.  The reason I (and you too) can have joy despite the attitudes and actions of those around me is that Joy is not like happiness.  Happiness is conditional, it is based on circumstances or how people make us feel.  Joy on the other hand can dwell within a person despite circumstances and others.  I'm not saying that I'm not sad when facing trials, what I am saying is that despite the pain and sadness I feel there remains a deep abiding joy based on the hope I have in Jesus.  “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full."  John 15:11

Seventh:  I must surrender my loved ones to Christ.  I can't keep holding onto them with one hand while trying to give them to Christ with the other.  I must completely release them with both hands to Him, and not take them back. As often as I find myself worrying and anxious about them I need to hand them over again.   After all He loves my loved ones far more then me and His love is not like mine, since mine can at times be conditional and self serving.  While His love is never conditional, it's sacrificial, and it is always concerned about what is best for the other.

Eighth:  The value and benefit of gratitude.  No matter how difficult or painful things may be or seem I always have plenty of reasons to give thanks to God.  Even if the only thing I can come up with is thanking Him for my salvation.  That when I practice being thankful even for those people who cause me pain, or difficult circumstances I find that my attitude changes toward them too.  When I'm tempted to complain and to be bitter the best solution is for me to practice gratitude.

Ninth:  Listen to and sing praise music!  No matter how downcast I feel when I stretch my arms up high singing praises to Jesus soon I feel my spirit lifting too.  I know of nothing that does a better job of correcting my wrong depressed thinking along with renewing and strengthening my faith.

Perhaps you are going through a trial today too.  Yours may not be the same as mine, in fact maybe you are like my loved one who is suffering deep emotional wounds.  Perhaps God has brought you here to read this because He has some things for you to learn within your trial.  Or maybe God has taught you something else that was not on my list.  If so and either way I'd love to hear what God is doing in your life.

Lord, Thank-you for your unfathomable love, for your abundant grace, and your patience with me and my sisters in Christ.  Thank-you also for your great wisdom in perfectly knowing what trials you would need to allow in order that I and they might participate in and better comprehend Jesus suffering.  Thank-you also for protecting us from those trials that would crush us.  Lord, help me and my sisters in Christ to completely trust you with our lives.  To allow you access to every part of who we are, and to be willing to be transparent with one another.  Help us Lord, to remember that we are nothing apart from you, and the only good we do is because of you working in us.  Lord, I cannot comprehend why You who were without sin would come down from heaven to suffer obscene insults, rejection from your children and bride, barbaric physical abuse, and the Father turning His back on you and pouring out His wrath on you all for me, for us?!?!  You took the punishment we deserved!  And why?  Not because we are worthy, but simply because of your love!  What love is this?  I cannot comprehend it and I am overwhelmed as I recall it!  Jesus, thank-you for your grace, for your love, and for your sacrifice!!!

"But those that hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."  Isaiah 40:30-31

Got the Morning Blues?

My sister-in-law shared this blog by Justin Taylor on her fb page (Thank-you Sis!).  I found that I could not resist clicking on it to read it.  I'm so glad I didn't!!!  The Author Taylor so simply and succinctly shares 6 simple truths form God's Word to remind yourself of when you wake up in the morning or anytime of day.  This week in the wake of a great tragedy, I really needed to be reminded of these truths!  For when you really reflect on these six truths you will find your perspective changed and your day will be lighter!

Got the Morning Blues? If you do, no matter what time of day it is be sure to click on this link highlighted in red.

Life is hard but God is good, good all the time!!! Blessings, my dear sisters!

HOPE in the Midst of Tragedy

In the wake of the tragic death of a young woman who've I've known since she was a young girl, I look to the one thing that consoles my heart.  That one day when I see Christ face to face all the pain, sorrow, and evil of this world will be a dim memory.  It all will pale in comparison to being in the presence of Jesus for all of eternity!  Today I grieve, grieve over the tragedy of her death and for the family that's left behind.  But though I grieve I have an eternal hope too!  The image of this young woman that keeps flooding my mind is from when she was just a young girl with freckles and a bright but somewhat shy smile.  I can't help but think that is how she looks now as she dances before Jesus.

There Will Be A Day

Jeremy Camp

from the album Speaking Louder Than Before

I try to hold on to this world with everything I have
But I feel the weight of what it brings, and the hurt that trys to grab
The many trials that seem to never end, His word declares this truth,
that we will enter in this rest with wonders anew

But I hold on to this hope and the promise that He brings
That there will be a place with no more suffering

(Chorus)
There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears
There will be a day when the burdens of this place, will be no more, we'll see Jesus face to face
But until that day, we'll hold on to you always

I know the journey seems so long
You feel you’re walking on your own
But there has never been a step
Where you’ve walked out all alone

(Chorus)

Troubled soul don’t lose your heart
Cause joy and peace he brings
And the beauty that’s in store
Outweighs the hurt of life’s sting

I can’t wait until that day where the very one I’ve lived for always will wipe away the sorrow that I’ve faced
To touch the scars that rescued me from a life of shame and misery this is why this is why I sing

"THERE WILL BE A DAY" (Official)
